no concealed-carry signs

Via the Eagle’s Rhonda Holman, who wonders:

Gun-rights proponents may see the businesses as infringing on their constitutional rights to carry, as those who favor gun laws may find it uncomfortable to be reminded that concealed-carry is now mostly the rule. Why don’t the 46 other concealed-carry states seem to have no-gun signs all over the place?

A good question. But, I — speaking as someone who had considered getting a permit* — wouldn’t be bothered by any sign or any business which chose to post one. I view the desire to keep concealed weapons out of one’s business as a private business decision and an expression of the owner’s natural rights. I would find out what the business’s policies are and respect them. Anyone with the least respect for private property and individual rights should do the same.

After all, Vermont of all places has open carry — meaning you can openly carry any firearm that you can legally own.

I noticed that KU has posted them on the streets at all entrances to campus. It is now and has always been illegal to carry any firearm — concealed or otherwise — on any public Kansas university’s property (or on any State property at all). So: helpful reminder or snotty protest?

  1. I forgot to comment on this last night:
Everywhere one turns in cities in Texas, one sees signs banning people from bringing in their weapons.

Yes, Ms. Holman: Texas. And not just in Austin, either.

I don’t know what her source of information for the other 46 states is, but as regards my native state, I know her to be misinformed.

  2. Interesting. I wonder about other states. The only other CCW state I’ve been in recently is Missouri, and I didn’t see a single one.

But it doesn’t surprise me that a Wichita Eagle writer doesn’t know what she’s talking about. It seems to be in the water there.

  3. Actually, here in Minnesota the signs are everywhere.
