done playing for now
I put an ad bar on the side. I also reduced the blogroll to a list of twenty random selections from my link collection, moving the entire list off to a separate page, which is still accessible through the “links” link at the top of every page.
I’m going to try the ad thing again, even though I made a grand total of $1.29 from my previous advertising efforts. I’m not going to put up one of those “tip-jar” links, because I’m not really desperate (and let’s face it — would you really pay for this crap?), and I just have a thing about begging for money.

Read around at my site Inside Online Advertising where I analyze changes I’ve made at Diggers Realm and their results.
It may help you. It may not.
I’ll tell you now though, an adstrip positioned where you have it now (low on the right navbar) will result in dismal clicks. Across the top and top of left navbar are where it’s at.
As Steve Pavlina said in his recent excellent post on making money from your blog, if you’re going to do advertising “don’t take a half-assed approach. Either be full-assed or no-assed.”
As an aside I have had exactly 0 complaints about ads on Diggers Realm. If you have valuable content most people won’t care. So if that’s one of the reasons you’re “tucking it away” so far down on the page, don’t be so worried.

Okay, a couple of questions:
- If you had my layout the way it is right now, where would you put the ads?
- Is it worth considering a three-column layout?

Advertising Makeover: Evolution
This is my first entry in the Advertising Makeover series I will be putting together. While doing my normal daily routine I came across this post by J.D. over at Evolution. It seems J.D. has attempted to run advertising in…

I did full advertising makeover entry on your website at Inside Online Advertising.
If you do decide to go for it and are worried that you may not like it, just keep a backup of your current templates/layout. Dive in head first and run it for a week or more and judge the results for yourself. If you don’t like it you can always go back to the old design relatively easy with no other loss than a little time.
Advertising is all about testing.

Whoa, interesting stuff. I’ll have to think on it. Thanks for the recommendations.
