concealed-carry in kansas, VII: status update (and some fish-wrap)

The concealed-carry bill, also known as SB 418, is currently in the House Federal and State Affairs Committee, having been passed by the Senate last week.

How did I know that? The State Legislature’s Web site has a feature that allows anyone to track individual bills through the legislative process. Tracking multiple bills at once, however, is a subscription-only service.

So far, Governor Sebelius has not threatened a veto publicly. The Topeka Capitol-Journal was the first media outlet to take a cheap shot at gubernatorial candidate and State Sen. Jim Barnett for changing his vote from last time (against) to this time (for) as a cynical ploy for votes, quoting the Kansas Democratic Party chairman, who made the initial cheap shot, after one of his own party’s senators (David Haley of Kansas City) did the exact same thing — for the very same reasons — as Barnett. In my post, I defended Sen. Haley against this very charge. I fail to see how the same analysis doesn’t apply to Sen. Barnett as well.

I’m not that impressed with Barnett as a gubernatorial candidate, but the TCJ’s cheap shot was still a cheap shot. The TCJ is fish-wrap, and has a long history of hackery. It’s not even on the “top five list” of Kansas newspapers. If you want Kansas news, you should read the Eagle or the Journal-World. You get better online service from these outlets (in this respect, the J-W is second to none) without the petty junior-high cheap shots.
