isn’t his time up yet?

How old a guy is Fred Phelps? I was hoping he’d be dead by now. Unfortunately, he outlived Idaho National Guard Cpl. Carrie French long enough to protest at her funeral.

The author of this piece titled the post “Pray for them, I guess.” The only prayer I have involving Fred Phelps is that he dies soon, and painfully - and that any children who’ve been afflicted by his bilious presence are rescued and able to live normal lives.

His church, the Westboro Baptist Church, is in downtown Topeka. I’ve driven by it several times. My anger boils every time. I guess that’s what he wants.

I had a gay friend in college. She was part of a group who sponsored former US Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders to come to K-State to speak during my freshman year. Phelps was there. She was also part of a group that threw an orange at him - a high-and-tight fastball that plunked him in the head. I smiled. She told me a story about another picketing, this time at a funeral of one of her friends. I stopped smiling.

He and his clan were at my graduation from K-State (the first time), in May 2001. They had their signs - but this was pre-9/11, so we were spared that indignity, at least. One sign had a Raid bug spray logo, which said “AIDS” in place of “Raid”, and a caption that said “AIDS KILLS FAGS DEAD!” Another had a silhouetted drawing of a man positioned behind another man who was bending over, captioned “GOD HATES FAGS.” It was being held by a girl of no more than seven years old. I walked past in my jacket and tie, black cap and gown, hot and perhaps a bit hung over. I forgot about being hot and uncomfortable, and thought only one thing: Aren’t you dead yet, Fred?

My grandparents, mother, step-mother, 18-year-old step-sister, both of my younger brothers, and my oldest niece (eight months old, thankfully too young to wonder) were all there.

The only prayer I have for Fred Phelps is that God strikes him down in a manner befitting his life: violent and painful.

UPDATE [10:33]: A commenter at INDC writes:

Beating is undoudbtedly what they deserve, but unfortunately probably also what they want.

That’s it: the Phelps clan are all sadomasochists. They invite anger and hatred and goad people into fights because they get off on it. That’s it. It has to be.
