one year

a year ago sunday, i took the next step.

today i took a different kind of step. i passed my master’s exam, and i will receive my master’s degree in mathematics from kansas state this summer. the battle for my future begins august 18.

i wrote this poem a long time ago, but it has repeatedly come into my mind as i think about this phase of my education.

onward

i sit and wait for life’s respite
but conquered fast by my desire
i take up arms and join the fight

i am starved for inner light
i fear my soul may soon expire
i sit and wait for life’s respite

although alone in winter’s blight
i once again shall stoke the fire
and take up arms to join the fight

but soon another storm alights
i brave the cold and boundless mire
to take up arms and join the fight

the endless war for soul’s succor
and even though sometimes i tire
of waiting long for life’s respite
i take up arms and join the fight.
