mad-cow in texas?

The state referenced in this AP story is Texas, the country’s leading producer of beef, but it will impact Kansas, the nation’s second-leading producer of beef: American ranchers reliving 2003 worries.

The origin of this mad-cow case hasn’t yet been confirmed, but it’s probably the first one in beef cattle within the United States. You may remember that there was a case back in 2003, but that was a dairy cow.

This case could hurt. One of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’s first trips outside of Kansas as governor was to Japan, to practically beg them to resume importing US beef — which the Japanese still haven’t done, and don’t figure to do anytime soon.
