get in the kitchen

Republican State Senator Kay O’Connor of Olathe is seeking her party’s nomination for the Kansas Secretary of State’s job. In fact, she probably shouldn’t be allowed out of the house, and if she’d had her way, she might not be, for in 2001, she uttered the following silliness:

In 2001, O’Connor decried a society that she said tears families apart, saying: “I think the 19th Amendment, while it’s not an evil in and of itself, is a symptom of something I don’t approve of…

…The 19th Amendment is around because men weren’t doing their jobs, and I think that’s sad. I believe the man should be the head of the family. The woman should be the heart of the family.”

Just in case you slept through your Government class in high school, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution is the one that guarantees women the right to vote.

Does there seem to be any cognitive dissonance here to you?

O’Connor goes on:

On Wednesday, she stood by those statements.

“I don’t deny saying that, and I will stick to my guns,” she said. “I am not bashful about taking an unpopular position. I can take the heat.”

She also says that men need to take better care of women, and that women need to be more accepting of that care; and also that she doesn’t think Kansas voters will make it a big deal. I wouldn’t be so sure. Predicting Kansas politics is well nigh impossible. A few bi-coastal elites will tell you that they can, but they are wrong. This will be a bigger deal than O’Connor thinks — Gov. Sebelius (a Democrat) could make it a MUCH bigger deal with one offhand statement, and I wish she’d do it.

I am sick to death of the Kansas Legislature. I’d like to dump the lot of them into the Tuttle Creek reservoir. If you are a Kansan (especially a young one), and you think these local races don’t matter — read this again, and then do a Google search on “Susan Wagle”, and then tell me again why they don’t matter.

This is also why I have no plans to join the Republican Party in my lifetime — because of the fools they keep standing up for elections in my state.

UPDATE [16:09]: I wonder what Kay O’Connor thinks of driving.

  1. So does she mean women can run for office but not vote?

Wow is she stupid. How do people like this get elected?

  2. Simple - she represents an affluent district (Olathe) where the bulk of the residents don’t care about state government. Therefore, people like this dominate.
