The SKS was designed BEFORE the AK, and it is NOT a "slightly modified" AK, unless you consider an M-16 is a slightly modified M-14... The SKS does not fire the 7.62 NATO round, unless it's been rebarreled and rechambered by a gunsmith... It fires the 7.62x39mm, which is a Russian round. The 7.62 NATO round is 7.62x51mm.
