kansas and japan - trading partners

Good news for Kansas with another Japan item: Japan, U.S. to resume some beef imports (Reuters).

Japan had stopped importing American beef during the mad-cow disease scare a few months back, and since Kansas is America’s second-leading producer of beef, some cattle ranchers here were starting to feel the pinch.

A month ago, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) spent nine days in Japan lobbying Japanese business officials to re-open the market, and it appears that she and the others in the delegation were successful.

The J-World article linked above also mentions that the state of Kansas did $800 million worth of business with Japan in 2003, which seems staggering until you consider Japan’s biggest (and maybe only) disadvantage: it doesn’t have the land area to grow food for everyone, and Kansas has that in abundance.
