death penalty in Kansas
Before last Friday, juries on capital cases in Kansas had two choices in sentence: the death penalty, or the “hard 50″ - 50 years in prison without parole. The Statehouse and Gov. Sebelius fixed that little hole on Friday; now juries can impose a life sentence without parole in capital cases as an alternative to the death penalty.
I wish some governor would take a stand and ban the death penalty. That governor would probably be voted out of office in my state, but I don’t think a country with the words “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” in her Constitution should impose the death penalty on its citizens, no matter their crimes. A sentence of lifetime imprisonment without parole or a lifetime at hard labor is more appropriate.
